The city of Rio de Janeiro has a rich and colourful history. The seat of power of the Portuguese Colonial Empire in the early 19th century and later the capital of the Brazilian Republic, Rio has been a witness and key player in many chapters of the nation’s story. And, since times long past, the city has been a fertile ground for sport.
In 2014, Brasil held the 2014 FIFA World Cup™ with a great success. Now, Rio de Janeiro will become the first South American city to also host the first Olympic and Paralympic Games, the second city in Latin America to host the event after Mexico City in 1968, and first Southern Hemisphere host-city since the 2000 games in Sydney. The Summer Games running from the 5th – 21st August 2016 and the Summer Paralympics will be held in the same city from 7th – 18th September 2016.
It’s only a matter of a few months until the torch is lit to the kick-off of the summer games; so join us in gearing up for the Rio 2016 Summer Games.
